Emily Hixson Shepherd

Emily Hixson Shepherd is a research administrator with over twenty years of experience, and has been with the Department of Surgery at Washington University since 2008. She has a degree in Anthropology from UMSL and an MBA from University of Utah. She is the Business Director for the Department of Surgery. She enjoys putting together large and complex grant proposals and collaborating with her team, faculty, and collaborators across the university. Surgery faculty submit over 200 grants per year and have ~$30M in research funding in a wide variety of research areas, including pancreatic cancer clinical trials, personalized breast cancer vaccines, peripheral nerve transfer surgery, public health, and community outreach. Emily has been a member for the Society of Research Administrators, International (SRAI) since 2003. She has served on multiple committees and working groups at Washington University with colleagues across multiple campuses, including the advisory committee for the STAR program (Specialized Training for Administrators of Research) and the working group for the implementation of Research Management System (RMS).
